Imagine that a tree is growing too close to your house. For safety reasons, you need to remove it.

“All right,” you say, “I'll do it.”

You recognize the need and make the commitment. Then you go out to the tree and ask it to move. Nothing happens. You begin to threaten the tree. Still no progress.

Since persuasion isn't working, you decide to use force. You back up, square your shoulders, lean forward and sprint toward the tree. As you near the brown bark, you lean lower and spread your arms wide.

Pow!

Your shoulder slams against the tree trunk, taking away your breath. As soon as you recover, you run in place, shoulder pushing hard against the wood, trying to move the tree.

A minute later, you sink to the ground. You've tried your best, but the tree hasn't moved.

Fine!” you say. Drastic measures are required.

With a grim determination you start clawing the base of the tree, digging into the hard dirt with your fingernails. The air is thick with summer humidity. A mosquito buzzes nearby. The sweet smell of roses registers in your brain right before a thorn pricks your arm as you move too close to the rose bushes growing behind the house.

Two hours later you've created a small – very small – pile of dirt. Perhaps you need to try something else.

You remember seeing a movie where a beaver cut up logs of wood with his teeth. You have teeth. You can do the same thing! So you give it a try, opening your mouth wide and gnawing rough bark that tastes too much like old lettuce.

You're determined. You're committed. You're working hard. But you're just not using the right tools to remove the tree. You need a chainsaw.

So it is with addiction. You can be determined and committed. You can work hard for a successful recovery. And yet you can keep failing. You need the right tools.

This website will teach you the tools you can use to go from figuratively gnawing a log with your teeth to using a chainsaw. The right tools make all the difference.
