Suggestions On Prayer
You can ask God for help the same way you might ask a parent, friend, or other loved individual. You use words and you use your heart: You speak and share what you are feeling and what you need.
Some people close their eyes and fold their arms to show reverence and block out distraction while talking with God. You might choose to do the same. You might also choose a place that is private, although talking with God can be done anywhere.
Then, just as you might say your friend’s name to call his attention, you might say “God” or “Heavenly Father” or “Allah” or “Universe”. Of course, you use respect however you call upon Him.
Next you might share some positive things in your life with Him. It might be hard to think of something positive, but there is something good in your life. It may be simply that you want to change (which is definitely a positive thing). It may be that you have the ability to think. Or that you had a meal today. Or that you have clothes to wear. There is something positive. Thank Him for the good you do have.
Following that you might say something positive about Him, similar to how you might tell a friend or parent, “I’m coming to you because I trust you,” or “You’ve always been there for me” or even “I’ve been told you can help.”
Perhaps stop at this point and listen for an answer. It would come quietly, almost imperceptibly, perhaps as a feeling or a thought.
Then continue your conversation. Let Him know your problem. Ask Him for Help.
How would you end a conversation with a loved one? You might end with saying, “Thank you,” or “I love you.”
Some people end their prayers with an “Amen,” for example, “In the name of Jesus Christ,” amen.
